The Process

When I think about Santa I always wax nostalgic, which is why this year I’ve gone whole hog into the Santa making process. I keep a sketchbook/ scrapbook of vintage Christmas and holiday memorabilia, ads, posters, and illustrations, and when sketching out new ideas for the holidays often reference these pieces of ephemera. This year I dove a bit deeper and wanted a look that was pre-coca cola Santa; something more old world and Bavarian. Using elements such as old baseball glove leather (a staple in my studio) and brass relics, along with my standard vintage metal coffee cans and patinaed metal lids, I was able create a new take on Santa that still retains that nostalgic look and feel. Each Santa has a distinct personality with a unique assemblage of found materials.
