An original mixed media collage in a series exploring iconic saints and spiritual figures. Background includes original graphite illustrations; foreground composition is all hand-cut paper.

  • Medium: hand-cut paper, acrylic, graphite, gold leaf metal sheets on wood
  • Size: 70" H x 52" W(framed)
  • Frame: hand-built salvaged metal
  • Hardware: ready to hang with D-ring hangers

The Process

Mary of the Fields is the first piece in a series of portraits to be developed throughout the year, each collage loosely connected to iconic saints and spiritual figures. Like all of Dolan's collage work, the portraits will begin with illustrations rendered in graphite and paint. When translating the work into a large-scale collage, the goal is to retain the immediacy and energy of the initial sketch. To this end, even the white and graphite-like pencil lines in the face and flowers are hand-cut paper.

Understanding Limited Series

Each work in Dolan Geiman’s portfolio is unique and hand-crafted. Some are one-of-a-kind pieces while others are reiterations of a recurring theme, denoted as Limited Series throughout the site.

Each piece in a Limited Series is created with a inimitable collection of found materials so that no two are exactly alike. Iterations will vary slightly in color, pattern, typography and frame; each is crafted in a limited quantity and without a predetermined edition numbering.
