Process

Process

Mary of the Fields is the first piece in a series of portraits to be developed throughout the year, each collage loosely connected to iconic saints and spiritual figures. Like all of Dolan's collage work, the portraits will begin with illustrations rendered in graphite and paint. When translating the work into a large-scale collage, the goal is to retain the immediacy and energy of the initial sketch. To this end, even the white and graphite-like pencil lines in the face and flowers are hand-cut paper.
