Size & Details

This large-scale mixed media landscape, rendered in vintage papers and paint, captures the vastness of the Texas sky and the limitlessness of an open horizon. Where wooden fence ends, a windmill stands vigil. A small herd of committed horses graze in the distance, almost swallowed up by the sheer breadth of the open land and air. Watch as the layers of color and texture unfold, asking you to contemplate the enormity of this land and the infinite possibility of outdoor adventure.

Everything is bigger in Texas, they say – and it’s true. In many of his cross-country travels, Dolan has found himself spellbound by the immense vastness that the Lone Star State’s open sky and horizon offer. This piece was born after a particularly moving vista came into view, requiring Dolan to pull his truck to the side of the country road and just breathe in the peace, the sky and the space. The colors represented here – some in acrylic paint, others fashioned from repurposed papers salvaged from a variety of vintage printed tomes – represent an amalgam of reality and dream, that liminal space between memory and fact, ringing almost true to photographic tones, but really – can a photo ever capture exactly what we saw, or what was? Unfolding in subtle detail and texture, Windmill Out West asks us to be transported from where we sit now to where we might arrive, and even what may lie beyond that. Breathe in that peace, breathe in the space.
