Dusk’s coolness descends on the pasture, drenching the warm ground in cool teal tones, a lone cowboy arrives for the round-up. In the foreground, a speckled longhorn takes in his surrounds, watching as the clouds roll in behind the centuries-old church as his herd begins their evening migration back to the ranch. A medley of paper collage – hand-crafted from antique papers celebrating the great state of Texas – and contemporary painting techniques, this large-scale, horizontal mixed media work offers a rich narrative, perfect for the modern farmhouse or your rustic getaway.

Process

A departure from a typical Western longhorn collage, Pecos Dust offers a contemporary look at this iconic creature in its wide-open surrounds, the product of hundreds of unique steps and many artistic techniques, each rendered in thoughtful succession in Dolan’s collage studio.

When first taking in this work, one’s eye might be drawn to the turquoise grasses in which the longhorn stands. This captivating marbled technique was achieved by applying layers of paint over fine mesh screens, alternating dark with light over screens of various sizes, to create the effect of a field dappled in texture from a cloudy sky overhead.

Over this background, Dolan sketched in the main character and small herd with its cowboy in the background, before beginning to fill in with antique papers pulled from magazines and printed books from the last century; in fact, the church was pulled as an intact object in full from a history textbook. Just the right size and orientation to create an additional layer of narrative for this piece.

Look closely at the papers making up the longhorn’s coat and you will see nods to Texas, along with an additional layer of screen printed ink to achieve his signature spots.

Dolan Geiman Paper Collages

Dolan's signature paper collage artwork celebrates America's West and Southwest. Color, composition, and detail come to life in hand-cut vintage materials, many salvaged in Dolan's cross-country travels.

Creating the original collage starts with a wood panel. Dolan pulls vintage sheet music from his vast collection and applies these to the wood, first with glue, then with a top layer of whitewash paint. In many prints, this background layer of sheet music peeks through.

Next, Dolan draws the outline for the original collage in graphite atop the sheet music.

Dolan returns to his extensive trove of collected papers – think magazines, antique textbooks, handwritten letters salvaged from abandoned farmsteads - and begins pulling the ideal colors for the piece. He cuts each piece of material by hand and carefully layers into the artwork. These collages are carefully crafted from thousands of small papers: no two are exactly alike.

Dolan's paper collages are finished in a handmade frame constructed from salvaged metal or a modern, minimal wood or metal frame.
