"A Pileated Woodpecker climbs an old loblolly pine tree in southern Virginia. In the background, the words and text are from a few books I found in an abandoned house in western Virginia. The book was about the civil war and the children had written their names in the book, replacing their first names with important civil war generals. The cream corn colored symbol on the bottom left is an image I found in an old newspaper from West Virginia and then screen printed on the background. The symbol depicts a lion fighting a unicorn, an apt analogy for the way I often view man's interaction with mother nature: brute force fighting with something beautiful and rare.”
