Reminiscent of a collection of mementos gathered throughout a long journey, If Sparrows Smoked Cigarettes is a contemporary assemblage work depicting various story points from a winding narrative as distinct moments in time. Each element in this piece, arranged in a careful tessellation of rectangles, combines collagraph printing techniques, acrylic paint, and remnants of salvaged vintage papers mounted on wood. Look closely among the muted earth tones and bursts of vibrant teal: you’ll see bits of found paper packaging, antique stamps, original sketches of western flora, and magazine advertisements dating back close to one hundred years. Rising from it all is an intrepid cowgirl confronting an unknown horizon; her name is Emma Jean Ransom. Get better acquainted with Emma Jean through Dolan's short story of the same name—which both inspired and was inspired by this piece. Assembled by hand and mounted to a whitewashed background treated with a layer of piano sheet music, If Sparrows Smoke Cigarettes is your latest invitation into the heart of the Wild West.
